How do you celebrate 100 years as the longest-running credit union in the state? If you’re First Oklahoma Federal Credit Union, you break ground on a tech-forward, lean and green financial headquarters that features a community events center, coworking space, banking services and more in the heart of Glenpool, one of the fastest-growing cities in Green Country.
First opened on September 10, 1923, as the Tulsa Postal Employees Credit Union, over the years First Oklahoma Credit Union has uniquely served the local community; the credit union even donated pencils to the war effort to provide needed lead during World War II. Today, First Oklahoma FCU continues to meet the increased demands for more personable, innovative banking in a changing world.
The move to Glenpool is just the latest way to help Tulsa and Creek county residents enjoy the best in banking. Glenpool is home to one of the largest contingents of First Oklahoma FCU members, yet the city has lacked a credit union located there. In addition to remedying that, the credit union’s new headquarters will provide a collaborative gathering space for co-working, as well as other resources for the entire community, including a coffee bar and an outdoor kitchen that can serve the nearby Glenpool high school football field for tailgating and other events.
John Freeman, CEO and president of First Oklahoma FCU, calls this community-focused approach to financial services an entire 180-degree pivot from how banks have operated historically, bringing much more value to the community as a whole.
“Our goal is to make banking tech-forward and easy to do anywhere—while still providing the guidance and support of banking staff whenever you need it,” Freeman says.
“We’re committed to building strong community connections throughout the area, and our new Glenpool space will allow us to do exactly that—in ways that make banking a better experience for everyone.”
The credit union’s 100-year anniversary will also coincide with First Oklahoma Federal Credit Union’s rollout of the latest in personal, easy-to-use banking—interactive teller machines (ITMs) that allow customers to talk with live tellers through live video to make banking simpler. ITMs are highly convenient, personalized, can be placed anywhere and easily moved to the locations that serve people best.
“We’re the only financial institution in Tulsa and Creek counties right now to match the ITM user’s experience with what our tellers see,” explains Freeman.
“This creates a seamless experience when our members need support and have questions. Transactions will happen smoothly, fast, and with the personal touch you’ve come to appreciate. And these services will be available at any of our locations around the area, not only Glenpool.”
While its headquarters will be shifting to Glenpool, the credit union will continue to serve all of Tulsa and Creek counties with individualized, personable, secure, one-on-one assistance from dedicated staff who can guide its members through into financial success on their terms.
“We’re proud of who we’ve been and where we started,” explains Freeman.
“Our roots in Oklahoma are deep and firm, born in serving the needs of the burgeoning postal service at a time when bridging connections across a growing country was vital. I believe our next 100 years will see First Oklahoma FCU prosper from the foundation we are currently building. We are looking forward to the opportunity to show people what they have been missing in their bank.”
First Oklahoma FCU is broke ground on its new headquarters in September 2022, and expects to open the new space to the public by October 2023. The new complex of banking and community offerings will be located in Brookover Corner centrally located at 151st Street right off the busy Highway I-75 corridor in Glenpool, near other popular, easily accessible shopping and business developments in that area.
